Health care professionals rely on medical practice management (MPM) software for various tracking and reporting needs to streamline their patient data. MPM allows them to keep tabs on patient information, billing, insurance payments, appointments and cancellations, available medications, and more.
The key benefit to MPM is that it improves efficiency for everyone in your office that works with it – from clerical staff to physicians. Before you look into a purchase for MPM or any other medical software or service, make sure to everyone’s input so you know you’re buying an appropriate software option that works for everyone.

Why MPM?
MPM Features
You will be faced with dozens of neat features – some useful while others are simply “nice to have.” It’s important to avoid bells and whistles when buying medical software. You should be looking for just those applications that you and your staff can use daily.
While MPM vendors can customize the software, most health practices will find everything they need in an off-the-shelf solution. You should only seek the customized route if you looked at all of your available options and none of them offered what you need.
What to look for in MPM
When looking at various MPM solutions (and smart buyers always investigate multiple options with different suppliers to make sure they’re getting the best deal), the most important thing to look for is compliance with HIPAA. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act specifies what can (and can’t) be done with electronic data about patients. Many MPM suppliers offer different options based on the size and type of the practice. It should also note which security standards you need and the ANSI billing formats you should be using.
Make sure the software can handle multiple offices, individual licenses, specific codes unique to your practice, and all of your tracking and reporting needs.
Since there could be an abundance of software options available, make sure the vendor shows you software specific to your practice. They can also customize a solution based on what they did for similar-sized businesses. And your needs could very well differ based on size: a dentist who works on his own will have different needs from a hospital with a large staff of employees.
When choosing a medical software program, make sure you can easily move data from one type of software to another. And always stress password security. Staffers should use the same diligence when selecting (and protecting) their software passwords as they would their personal online accounts or bank card PIN.
One valuable attribute to MPM is HL7 protocol allows you to share data between MPM and another medical software program like Electronic Medical Records (EMR) in real-time. If a vendor offers both types of software, you may be able to get a discount. Just make sure that they concentrate on both types of software equally.
